Even though water is assumed to be pure by nature, this is not the case due to pollution. In March every year, the United Nations always remind the world of the importance of reusing wastewater as the world celebrates world water day. Several methods can be used when it comes to water treatment. These methods are not expensive, as some of them are pocket friendly. Below, we will explore some of the methods used in water treatment.
Boiling
Boiling is one of the oldest methods that many use in keeping their water safe for drinking. By boiling the water, one can get rid of the germs that may have infiltrated the water, making it unsafe for drinking. Boiling water is one of the cheapest and easiest methods that anybody can apply.
Filtration
Filtration involves the process of water passing through a filter. This method aims to filter away particles that may be present in the water. These filters are mainly composed of sand and gravel. Filtration involves the removal of particles from water, leaving it smooth. The filtration method is simple, as one can use a piece of cloth or siever as a filter.
Disinfection
Water companies mainly use the disinfection method. These companies ensure that the water is disinfected before taking it to the distribution system. The main reason for disinfecting the water is to ensure that the water does not have any bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Drinking water that may contain this type of organism may cause harm to the human body, and that's why there is always a need for disinfection. The main substance used in disinfecting water is known to be chlorine. Many use chlorine because it is very effective.
Sedimentation
In most cases, this method is commonly used to treat water that has flocs. Here, the process involves letting the water pass through sedimentation basins. As the water passes slowly, the floc particles get to settle in the bottom. These particles that get to settle at the bottom are known as sludge. Sedimentation is a rarely used method, but it is worth it, especially when one has time. The mechanism can easily be confused with filtration. However, there is no use for filters.
