Seasoned golfers often talk about "reading the green." This means that they attempt to assess how a putting green is laid out, to aid them in landing their ball in the hole in the shortest amount of strokes possible. When visiting a new golf course, you may feel confident about your ability to play, but then wind up making some errors that cost you the opportunity to win against your competitors. Use some tips to aid you with analyzing each green that is part of a course.
Your Regular Routine
If you currently golf at one particular course, but your buddies have asked you to go with them to a country club or a public course that you are unfamiliar with, utilize your home golf course during some practice sessions. Head out to the golf course as you would on any other occasion. This time, bring along a tape measure, to assist with determining how far each of your putting strokes go.
By adjusting your grip on a putter and hitting it from various angles, you may notice a difference in the curvature or the speed of the ball. The ball may also traverse varying lengths, depending upon how you manipulate the club. Record information that you have learned through your practice session and approach your ball in the same manner when you visit the new course.
Walking Around And Completing An Assessment
On the day that you will be golfing with your friends, arrive at the course early so that you can get ready for the competition. Use the practice green to attempt to putt some balls into the holes. This exercise will alert you to the type of green surface that is used throughout the course and will prepare you for the actual competition.
Before beginning each hole, let your peers know that you would like to walk quickly through the hole so that you can see how it is laid out and so that you can observe the manner in which the putting green is set up. While standing on top of a green, it may seem as if the surface is flat.
While standing alongside the green, however, you may notice a slight tilt in the green, especially if the putting green is on top of a slightly sloped surface. Knowing this information may change the manner in which you approach your ball, once it has landed on the green.
