Most self storage facilities are clean and well kept, but there are limitations. Although the facility can treat the exterior of the units to prevent pests, it is up to you to maintain a pest-free environment inside the unit. There are several things that can make your unit more pest prone. Avoid the following storage mistakes so you don't develop a problem.
#1: Storing edibles
Food, especially if it isn't in a pest-proof container like a can or glass jar, is a major no-no in a storage unit. Although it is pretty simple to avoid storing actual food stuffs, there are some items that many pests consider food that people don't. Adhesives are at the top of this list, since many glues are nothing more than starch-containing paste. Paper and natural fabrics can also be considered food for many insects or rodent pests. Another common class of items that can attract pests are bathroom items – toothpaste and some toiletries are little more than a tasty snack to some pests.
#2: Improper packaging
Although you aren't likely to store food, fabric and paper may need to find a home in your storage unit. This means protecting them. A cardboard box alone isn't enough. In fact, cardboard can also be a bedding and food material for some insect pests, which will only make the problem worse. Store any papers, fabric, or other items that you are worried will attract pests in a plastic storage tub with a tight fitting lid. As an added benefit this will also protect these items from moisture. If you live in a humid climate, toss a few silica gel packets in each tub to absorb any moisture that gets trapped inside.
#3: Skipping the deep clean
Another major attractant in a storage unit is food residue. You are most likely to find this on upholstery or kitchen appliances. Make sure appliances like fridges and microwaves are scrubbed out and disinfected before storage – you don't want to leave a crumb behind. Fabric items should be laundered or spot cleaned. Upholstery, like on the sofa, should undergo an upholstery shampooing and every nook and cranny should be cleaned for crumbs. Even children's toys should be wiped down before storage so that there are no sticky fingerprints or food crumbs left to attract pests.
