Air Conditioning Installation: 3 Things Your Contractor Can Do To Improve Your AC's Performance

Business Articles

If you're ready to install a new air conditioning system in your home, you may want to ask your AC contractor about other services that may improve your system's performance after installation. Placing an air vent system in your attic, repairing your air vents, and even cleaning and sealing your duct system may all help reduce your cooling costs. In addition, your home's indoor environment may improve, which reduces your family's exposure to allergens like mold. Here are three things to ask your contractor to do for you.

Add an Air Vent System to the Attic

When you have your new AC installed, ask your HVAC contractor to add an air vent system in the attic. Most vent systems consist of an attic fan and exhaust pipes. However, you may choose to add a solar powered fan in the roof of your attic for the most benefits. The fan uses a thermostat to monitor the attic's heat. A solar fan may also help you save money on your energy expenses because it relies on the power of the sun to run.

Solar powered attic fans remove excess heat from your attic. If heat remains in your attic, it may travel back into the home through the air vents in your ceiling. Your new air conditioner may stay on longer and work harder to cool your home because it needs to remove the excess heat.

In addition, the heat in your attic may cause the room to fill up with humidity. Humid air contains water and moisture that can condensate or stick to your attic's walls, flooring and ceiling. Once it does, mold and mildew may grow and cause problems with your family's health. Your family and pets may suffer from allergy symptoms, such as sneezing and sinus inflammations because of the attic's mold, mildew and high humidity.

Keep in mind that mold and mildew can spread rapidly to other areas of the home, especially if the rooms contain humid air. You may protect your home and family better by installing a solar or another type of fan to the attic. Your HVAC contractor may provide more details about the fans to help you decide.

Clean Your Air Vents

Even a new air conditioner may run into problems after installation if the air vents are blocked and dirtied with debris. Pet hair, dander, dust, and outdoor allergens can inhabit the openings of your air vents. Over time, the contaminants travel to the duct system in your attic. The air produced by your cooling system may have a hard time circulating through the blockages.

Upon request, your AC contractor may clean the inside of your air vents in each room. The contractors may also vacuum between the grilles of your vents, where contaminants, such as dust and pollen, can hide.

If the vents appear bent, rusted or damaged, your contractors may suggest that you replace them. Your air conditioner's cool air may still have problems moving through damaged air vents. It's essential that you keep all areas of your venting system in good repair.

Clean, Repair and Seal Your Duct System

The last thing you should ask your contractors to do is check the ducts in the attic. Air ducts can open up or tear over time, or they may pull away from the vents in your ceiling. The ducts may also deteriorate from excessive use or heat. The insides of the ducts may fill up with debris and block the flow of air through the home.

Cleaning, repairing and sealing the duct system may improve the functions of your new air conditioning system by making it easier to cool and circulate air.

These are just three things you may ask your contractors to do for your home during your AC installation. If you want to know more about them or ways to improve your home after your new air conditioning installation, contact your HVAC contractors today.
